Project started: Q2 2020 | Fundraising goal: EUR 17.000 then EUR 2000 yearly

Recently, the management of the Trivium Foundation visited a community in Ilha do Goiabal in the state of Maranhão, Brazil. The community is involved in our Carnauba Wax supply chain. It became very apparent how necessary our involvement is. None of the primary needs such as schooling, health facilities or clean drinking water are readily available.

Location

According to the World Bank, Maranhão is the poorest state in Brazil, with a poverty rate of 52% of its population. It has an average income per capital of less than $2 per day. The state is known for its Carnauba trees – one of the main sources of income in this region. The community we support is involved in De Monchy International’s Carnauba Wax supply chain.

The project

Together with our local partner, Instituto Carnauba, we decided to build a school. Until now, children of the Goiabal communities haven’t been able to get proper education. Only 30% of all children in this region are able to go to school, but the quality of education is very poor and the schools can only be reached by boat. The Goiabal community is spread over hundreds of islands, so have lived very isolated with very little basic facilities. Together with an architect, we have researched the possible locations, taking into consideration factors like raining season and seasonal floods.

In November 2019, the construction will start and we expect completion in January 2020. More than 150 children of the Goaibal and other surrounding communities will be able to go to school here. We will also include a playground, library, community center, vegetable garden and a kitchen/lunchroom. We will also ensure they will have access to filtered drinking water.

The construction was supposed to start in November 2019, but due to excessive rains and later on the Corona pandemic, we were not able to start construction. We hope to be able to start in June 2020.
